This amazing group - the Canadian Glaze Oil Society - began on a lovely June afternoon in 2016. We had gathered for painting, mentoring and lunch in the garden at Kathie Dick’s house, in Oakville Ontario. As we chatted, Cathy Roberts suggested it was high time that we glazers form an artist society. Vanessa Cress Lokos agreed and suggested it be a national group - one that would welcome similar minded artists from across Canada. What kind of a group did we want it to be? An inclusive one. One that offered friendship and comraderie. One that encouraged and promoted the professional growth and opportunities of its artists. One that provided mechanism for education in this rarely taught but valuable process of painting started by the Old Masters of the Renaissance era. One that provided it to artists in the broader community as well as our members. And so it was.
Our membership does include any artist interested in these processes who would like to join us. We get together every week to paint and enjoy the company of our fellow members (albeit on Zoom, since the Pandemic). We have coffee parties, Christmas parties and lunches. We host exhibits and shows for our members at least every two years, promote our artists on this website, Instagram and Facebook. We offer glaze oil classes at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels plus enriching workshops, webinars, lectures, videos and blogs on glazing and various other technical or professional aspects of art making and art careers.
The CGOS now has over twenty proud members who are “painters who dance with colour - spectacular colour”. We welcome any other artists that are intrigued and would like to join us as well!
